There are those on the left and right who offer only grievance: The government is proceeding with the job of economic renewal.
In the latest financial plan, appropriate selections were enacted for Britain, cutting the cost of energy with a £150 reduction in charges, protecting the NHS and tackling the scourge of child poverty by scrapping the two-child restriction. We also ensured that the income generated through taxes was done equitably, with everyone contributing but those with the greatest capacity bearing an appropriate burden.
Due to the decisions enacted, the budget created a more stable economic environment, reducing price increases and state borrowing costs. This is crucial for defending our public services, when £1 in every £10 spent by government goes on borrowing costs.
Advancing Financial Initiatives
The announcement strengthens the action we have already taken to boost financial conditions: providing £120bn in extra capital investment in such things as roads, rail and energy; enacting the biggest planning reforms in a generation to favor construction, not impediments; supporting the expansion of Heathrow and Gatwick; and signing trade deals with the EU, India and the US.
Taken together, these have allowed us to exceed our growth forecasts.
Rejuvenating Our State
As I set out at the party conference, the government’s purpose is precisely the renewal of our financial system, our localities and our government. Via these methods, we will end decline and reestablish confidence in our country.
We will take on those on the left and right who only offer complaints and whose approach would lead to additional deterioration. Let me be clear, ramping up deficit spending or reimposing spending cuts – that is the approach of deterioration and I refuse to countenance it.
A Comprehensive Growth Mission
During an address next week, I will frame the economic measures within the broader commercial rejuvenation on which the government will be assessed following completion of this parliament.
For us to realize the nationwide rejuvenation we seek, we must do more to promote development, to address idleness among young people and to pursue closer international cooperation with our trading partners.
Regulatory Reform Initiative
Our expansion agenda will include a refreshed emphasis on removing superfluous red tape. Frequently it was those on the left who have preferred controls, but there is nothing progressive in regulations which serve only to increase the cost of living for the poorest, to impede commercial development unnecessarily, or stop a progressive administration achieving its aims.
Hence the rationale I am asking the business secretary to tackle the type of pointless gold-plating and unnecessary red tape that add to costs and impede our industrial strategy.
Social Security Reform
Financial revitalization likewise requires that we must continue to overhaul social security. We took over an ineffective structure that resulted in impoverished youth going hungry and which discarded youth as too sick to work.
We should not endorse either part of that ineffective right-wing framework. Hence the reason we will do more to support adolescents in reaching their abilities.
Since when individuals are overlooked in your early career, if you are refused the help you need to address psychological challenges, or if you are just discounted because you are neurodivergent or disabled, then it can imprison you in a loop of worklessness and dependency for decades.
This costs the country money, is detrimental to our output, but considerably more crucially, it removes potential and disregards ability. Any Labour government worthy of the name cannot ignore that.
That is why we have commissioned former health secretary to make actionable suggestions to help young people with wellbeing challenges secure jobs, training or education – making certain they get help to thrive and not sidelined.
Global Commerce Improvement
Ultimately, we must take further action to help our businesses conduct global commerce. There is no credible economic vision for Britain that does not establish us as a accessible, commercial nation.
We have to address the reality that the mishandled separation arrangement substantially damaged our finances. It isn't necessary to have a PhD in economics to know that erecting unnecessary trade barriers with your largest commercial ally will hinder development and boost prices.
Thus an aspect of our economic renewal will be continuing to move towards a enhanced business association with the EU. When we can access more affordable sustenance, improve development and produce work opportunities by having a stronger connection with Europe, we should.
A Substantial Strategy for Significant Challenges
A budget based on fair choices for Britain must be backed up with a determination to achieve the commercial rejuvenation that the country needs.
By delivering a big, bold long-term plan, not a set of quick fixes, we will revitalize the nation. We should evolve anew a meaningful society, with a serious government, able collectively to undertake challenging tasks to regain control of our future.
Through maintaining a distinct purpose to renew our economy, our communities and our state, we will execute the modification we committed to – and then be judged on it at the next election.
