The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
