The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create this new product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company
This latest development escalates the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
