The North London club has confirmed that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, said to be worth around £10m per year, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

Such scrutiny is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

Earlier this year, Arsenal faced allegations of issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by declining to meet with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to talk about the deal.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a government department.

Many speculate that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “jointly decided” to go their separate ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's goal of becoming an global sports center in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing local football projects that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches enhance their abilities and encourage more involvement in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's aspirations.

Yet this view was contested by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the protest movement Gunners for Peace staging protests outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to cover up the Rwanda branding on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

Around that time, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Simultaneously, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has led to the emblem appearing on the La Liga side's male and female kits.
