Northampton may not be the most tropical location in the world, but its squad delivers an abundance of romance and adventure.

In a town famous for footwear manufacturing, you would think punting to be the Northampton's main approach. But under head coach Phil Dowson, the team in the club's hues opt to keep ball in hand.

Despite playing for a distinctly UK location, they exhibit a style typical of the best Gallic practitioners of expansive play.

After Dowson and the head coach Sam Vesty stepped up in 2022, Northampton have claimed victory in the English top flight and advanced far in the European competition – defeated by Bordeaux-Bègles in last season’s final and ousted by Dublin-based club in a last-four clash earlier.

They lead the Prem table after multiple successes and a single stalemate and travel to Bristol on Saturday as the only unbeaten side, aiming for a first win at Ashton Gate since 2021.

It would be natural to think Dowson, who participated in 262 elite fixtures for Newcastle, Northampton and Worcester combined, consistently aimed to be a manager.

“As a professional, I didn't really think about it,” he says. “Yet as you age, you realise how much you enjoy the sport, and what the normal employment entails. I spent some time at Metro Bank doing an internship. You travel to work a several occasions, and it was challenging – you see what you do and don’t have.”

Talks with former mentors resulted in a position at the Saints. Fast-forward several seasons and Dowson manages a roster progressively crammed with global stars: Tommy Freeman, Fraser Dingwall, Alex Mitchell and Alex Coles lined up for the Red Rose facing the All Blacks two weeks ago.

Henry Pollock also had a significant influence off the bench in the national team's perfect autumn while the fly-half, down the line, will take over the pivotal position.

Is the rise of this exceptional cohort because of the club's environment, or is it chance?

“This is a mix of each,” says Dowson. “I would acknowledge the former director of rugby, who gave them opportunities, and we had challenging moments. But the exposure they had as a group is undoubtedly one of the causes they are so close-knit and so skilled.”

Dowson also cites Jim Mallinder, an earlier coach at Franklin’s Gardens, as a major influence. “I’ve been fortunate to be coached by really interesting individuals,” he says. “He had a major effect on my rugby life, my coaching, how I manage people.”

The team play appealing rugby, which became obvious in the example of Anthony Belleau. The Gallic player was part of the opposing team defeated in the continental tournament in April when Tommy Freeman notched a three tries. The player was impressed to such an extent to buck the pattern of UK players joining Top 14 sides.

“A mate called me and stated: ‘There’s a fly-half from France who’s seeking a team,’” Dowson recalls. “My response was: ‘We don’t have funds for a imported playmaker. A different option will have to wait.’

‘He’s looking for a fresh start, for the chance to prove his worth,’ my mate informed me. That interested me. We spoke to Belleau and his language skills was incredible, he was eloquent, he had a funny side.

“We questioned: ‘What are you seeking from this?’ He answered to be guided, to be pushed, to be outside his comfort zone and away from the domestic competition. I was like: ‘Welcome aboard, you’re a great person.’ And he turned out to be. We’re lucky to have him.”

Dowson says the emerging the flanker provides a unique enthusiasm. Has he coached anyone comparable? “Not really,” Dowson answers. “All players are individual but Henry is distinct and special in multiple respects. He’s unafraid to be who he is.”

Pollock’s sensational touchdown against the Irish side last season illustrated his freakish talent, but some of his animated on-field actions have led to allegations of arrogance.

“On occasion seems arrogant in his conduct, but he’s the opposite,” Dowson says. “Plus Pollock is not joking around constantly. Game-wise he has input – he’s a smart player. I feel at times it’s depicted that he’s only a character. But he’s bright and a positive influence in the squad.”

Not many coaches would describe themselves as having a bromance with a head coach, but that is how Dowson characterizes his partnership with Vesty.

“Together share an inquisitiveness around different things,” he says. “We have a literary circle. He wants to see everything, aims to learn all there is, desires to try new experiences, and I believe I’m the similar.

“We talk about many topics beyond the sport: films, books, thoughts, art. When we played our French rivals last year, Notre-Dame was undergoing restoration, so we had a little wander around.”

One more fixture in Gall is approaching: Northampton’s return with the English competition will be brief because the continental event takes over shortly. The French side, in the shadow of the border region, are the opening fixture on matchday before the Bulls travel to a week later.
