Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
