The plane pushed through successive sheets of sleet during the approach into its destination. A sinking feeling settled over me during the journey, growing stronger as I made my way through the arrivals hall. I was unhappy about returning to the place where I had spent my youth, after living on the far side of the world for what had felt like a lifetime.

After a few days, I went out to get a trim. My thoughts was distant, lingering over an sea, when I heard something smack into the pavement. I glanced down to see a pigeon on its side, splayed out, and convulsing.

The crash happened just as children were filing out from the local primary school and so within moments a group of children had formed, surrounded by their mums and dads. This circle of bemused faces stared down at the creature, unsure what to say or do. The kids were more definitive: “Dad, she needs a vet, can we call an ambulance?” I took off my anorak, knelt down and scooped the pigeon up into it. “Don’t worry, sweet, the nice man will look after her!” remarked one mother with a sense of relief. I had become the rescue vehicle for this pigeon that had just come down hard, against its will, as I had a short time earlier.

I walked slowly home, arms held out, with the bird tucked safely inside the jacket.

I had no idea that my on-the-spot decision to aid my feathered charge (the name I chose for my avian patient) would direct me to a network of city dwellers devoting significant amounts of effort to provide not only transport for feral pigeons but X-rays, recovery care, and even “pigeon physio”.

I located a small container for Belinda, lined it with an old T-shirt, and put her inside. Every 20 minutes or so, I’d peek inside just long enough for us to share a momentary glance.

Those moments of common bewilderment punctuated my desperate search for what to do after that. I called friends for guidance and one recommended trying social media, where, to my astonishment, I discovered a bird rehabilitation group, and submitted a request to become a member.

An Anarchic Model

With a large membership, the group has an decentralized system: someone in Manchester stumbles across an injured pigeon, a urgent post is published, then a comment section “evaluation” follows. If the bird is deemed in need of an scan, someone with a vet link can arrange it; if it needs rehabilitation, a “carer” will volunteer to look after the bird.

Volunteers each have their own highly developed skills, whether it’s mending broken wings or treating wounds. Their momentous, combined effort for the pigeons of the city runs entirely on goodwill.

Belinda was quickly diagnosed with neurological problems, likely a concussion, and placed with a rehabber who would administer pain relief and a course of careful physio. We never found out exactly what caused her to plummet. I took up the role of bird taxi once more, riding the streetcar across the city with Belinda in a container on my lap so she could get the care she needed.

A New Perspective

After finding this underground pigeon “health service”, I began to feel much differently about being back in my city. I question any of the places I had called home while away could claim anything even close. It also dawned on me that this was not the first time I’d been part of a pigeon recovery: almost 20 years earlier I’d witnessed one drop from the sky into the schoolyard of my old school. Again, children circled the bird, but only one – my closest friend at the time – had the courage to scoop it up and take it to a safe place.

The aforementioned friend has since passed away – one of several friends to lose their lives in the years before my leaving from Manchester. I realised that this had been a big part of what had made the return so painful.

A History of Comfort

Pigeons have a longstanding role as “emotional support” animals, especially in the North. Laborers started to keep the birds because they gave them comfort and an reason to look up at the open air between long shifts of underground work. During the Depression, workers on the assistance also found comfort in pigeons, but keeping them was considered a sign of “despair”.

Nowadays, pigeons are often written off as simple, diseased or a general nuisance. Before finding the rehab group, I had contacted a veterinarian, who told me: “if you bring the bird here, leave it in the lot and we’ll put it down.”

It? Not our Belinda. Although unlikely to ever fly again , she has taken to her newly grounded life with aplomb in a volunteer’s spare bedroom. Each contented coo, often caused by her favourite food, frozen peas, feels like a demonstration in perseverance and strength – and I am eternally thankful to her for showing me a different facet to the city I believed I understood.
