A Heartbreaking Transformation Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States
In late October 2024, the environment was entirely different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate citizens could admit America's serious imperfections – its unfairness and disparity – however they could still see it as America. A democratic nation. A place where legal governance carried weight. A country headed by a honorable and decent official, despite his advanced age and increasing frailty.
These days, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens hardly identify the country we inhabit. People alleged as undocumented migrants are detained and forced into vans, at times denied due process. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, renamed the War Department, has practically liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Universities, legal practices, media outlets are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as aristocracy.
“America, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”
Every morning starts to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and painful to realize – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it occurred.
Nevertheless, it is known that Trump was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming first term and following the cautions associated with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – following Trump himself stated openly he intended to act as an autocrat just on day one – enough Americans chose him over his Democratic opponent.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it's more daunting to realize that we have only been several months into this presidential term. How will an additional three years of this downfall find us? And if that period turns into an prolonged era, because there is not anyone to restrain this president from determining that additional tenure is necessary, possibly for defense purposes?
Granted, not everything is hopeless. There will be midterm elections next year that may create a new political equilibrium, should Democrats recapture the Senate or House of parliament. We have elected officials who are striving to apply certain responsibility, for example representatives who are starting a probe concerning the try to fund seizure from legal authorities.
And a national vote in the next cycle could begin the path to recovery just as the previous vote placed us on this unfortunate course.
We see countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas across municipalities, similar to recent in the past days during anti-authority protests.
An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is rising”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or during the Vietnam war protests or in the seventies crisis.
During those times, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.
The author states he knows the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. As support, he references the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a personality's dismissal and the almost universal defiance by media to accept military mandates they report only approved content.
“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive until certain corruption grows too toxic, a particular deed so disrespectful toward public welfare, some brutality so disruptive, that he is forced but to awaken.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may be validated.
At the same time, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its status in the world and its commitment to legal principles?
Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?
My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is true; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, though, advises me that we must try, in whatever ways we can.
In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more thoroughly, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For different individuals, it might involve working on election efforts, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to protect ballot privileges.
Under twelve months back, we were in a separate situation. In the future? Or in several years? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to attempt to persevere.
